A Nielsen SoundScan é um sistema de informação e acompanhamento, que rastreia as vendas de álbuns e singles em todo os Estados Unidos. Os dados são coletados semanalmente e disponibilizados toda quarta-feira para os assinantes, que incluem as gravadoras, editoras, varejistas de música, promotores independentes, empresas de cinema e TV, e gerentes de artistas. É a fonte de vendas para as paradas da Billboard, tornando-se a maior fonte de vendas na indústria musical.

SoundScan começou a contabilizar os dados de vendas em 1º de março de 1991 sendo que, anteriormente, a Billboard rastreava as vendas recrutando lojas em todo os Estados Unidos e perguntando sobre – um método que foi inerentemente propenso a erros e aberto à fraude absoluta. Abaixo você confere uma lista com os discos mais vendidos desde que a Nielsen SoundScan começou a rastrear as vendas nos Estados Unidos (1991-2014).
